Painting an Afro Woman on Hoodie

Painting an afro woman on hoodie.

I purchased a brand new hoodie to paint on as a gift to a friend.

Her birthday is swiftly approaching, and I thought that this would be a great surprise.

I was aiming to paint a woman on the hoodie.

For me, every painting begins with a sketch.

Once upon a time, I would draw people purely from my imagination.

While this method produced decent drawings, I discovered a few years ago that my sketches of people look more realistic if I am looking at an actual photo while I am drawing.

I am not able to draw an exact replica of the photo, but I am able to capture some of the features, and improvise others so that the drawing becomes my own.

Painting an Afro Woman on Hoodie - The Hair

I am a hair lover.

I love all hair types: kinky, straight, curly, wavy, textured, etc.

I also love all types of hairstyles: buns, half-up half-down, ponytails, straight styles, curly styles, locs, braids, twists, cornrows, afro puffs, and afros. (This is not an exhaustive list).

Having said that, it should come as no shock that styling the hair is my favorite part when drawing people.

I know that my friend favors images of women with afro textured hair.

As a result, I painted a woman with a side afro puff.

I wanted to give the lady "big" hair.

I started with small balls of black paint, and kept adding paint, all while smudging to define the texture.

Smudging the paint is essential for creating the look of afro textured hair.

Painting an Afro Woman on Hoodie - The Photo v. The Drawing

In line with what I stated above, I was looking at a photo when I drew this image.

I made it my own in several ways:

1. The woman in the photo had braids in her hair.

2.  The style of the dress has been changed.

3. The color of the dress has been changed.

4. The pose is slightly different.

5. The woman in the photo does not have flowers in her hair.; and

6. The woman in the photo is not wearing eye make-up.

The video that I created of me actually painting this image can be seen on my Instagram page.

Social media is full of photos to select.

There are many more afro women I look forward to painting.
